One Plus 8 and One Plus 8 Pro | Features and Comparison

After presenting the One Plus 7T and One Plus 7T Pro at the end of last year, the Carl Pei company has returned to the arena with two other devices with which they seek to continue competing in 2020. As expected, their official names are One Plus 8 and One Plus 8 Pro and they are indeed two premium high-end handsets that mount the latest of the latest from Qualcomm.

As their own names indicate, the One Plus 8 is the “basic” model, while the Pro model has some improvements such as the screen refresh rate, which reaches 120 Hz. One Plus already stood out in 2019 for implementing 90 Hz in the One Plus 7 Pro, but now level up and add 30Hz more. The standard model is maintained at 90 Hz, which is not bad if we start from the basis that conventional mobiles have 60 Hz. Presentations made, we will get to know them better.

Display Features

We start by reviewing the aesthetic section, a section in which there are not too many differences, although that does not mean that there are not. On the one hand, the most obvious: the One Plus 8 Pro is larger and somewhat thicker than the standard model and has more cameras at the rear. Four, to be exact. The standard model has three lenses, but both share the arrangement in a vertical format module at the rear.

Speaking of the display, both devices mount a Fluid AMOLED panel with a perforation in the upper left corner to house the internal camera. Indeed, One Plus has disposed of the pop-up mechanism. The standard model has a 6.55-inch panel with Full HD + resolution, while the Pro model is somewhat larger, 6.78 inches, and has QHD + resolution. Differences also in the refresh rate, which is 90 Hz maximum in the On ePlus 8 and 120 Hz in the Pro model. In both cases, the screen is curved.

A similar, but not identical, engine

So we go on to talk about the engine, where there are many similarities, but some other differences. First thing, the processor. The two new One Plus mount the Snapdragon 865, the Adreno 650 GPU and the Snapdragon X55 modem. That means not only that they have one of the most powerful processors on the market, but that they are compatible with 5G NSA and SA networks, that is, with the current ones and those that are to come.

As for RAM, both models share the quantity, but not the technology. The two One Plus will be available with eight or 12 GB of RAM, but in the standard model it will be LPDDR4 and in the Pro model LPDDR5, that is, 50% faster and 30% more efficient. We will have to wait for the analysis to see if this shows in the day today. What they do have in common is the internal storage, 128 or 256 GB UFS 3.0.

As far as the battery is concerned, the One Plus 8 has 4,350 mAh and the One Plus 8 pro 4,510 mAh, a subtle difference of 160 mAh. In both cases, One Plus has implemented Warp Charge 30T, its 30W fast charging technology, but in the case of the One Plus 8 Pro, there is also 30W wireless charging. According to One Plus, the Pro model charges 50% in 30 minutes using wireless charging and in 23 minutes using a cable.

More cameras for the Pro

We finish talking about the photographic section, where there are also differences. The One Plus 8 has a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 main sensor with 0.8-micron pixels with optical and digital image stabilization and f / 1.75 aperture. It is accompanied by a 16-megapixel f / 2.2 wide-angle, a two-megapixel f / 2.4 macro sensor and a dual-tone LED flash. That is, it does not have an optical zoom, but the zoom is in the hands of 48 megapixels and cropping.

In One Plus 8 Pro, meanwhile, it has a 48-megapixel Sony IMX689 main sensor with 1.12-micron pixels, the same stabilization as the standard model and f / 1.78 aperture. Next to it, there is a 48-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens with 119º of vision and f / 2.2 aperture that will not only make it wide-angle but also macro thanks to a motor that will change the focal length.
